Common TN-257 / TN-253 Problems
If your Brother TN-257/TN-253 toner cartridges aren't recognized by your printer, it's possible that the printer is having problems reading the gold contact chip on the cartridge's end. When residue or finger print oil gets on this contact point, it might cause a printer fault. To fix this, gently wipe the contact point with a lint-free cloth or a Q-tip. After that, insert the cartridge into the printer, turn it off, disconnect it for 10-15 seconds, plug it back in, and turn it on again. This will reset the printer and, more than likely, cause the cartridge to read correctly in the printer.
If you are still having issues, try resetting the cartridges by clicking on the corresponding printer you have:
If the above does not work, it's possible you have updated the firmware on your Brother printer. Firmware updates sometimes disable non Brother-brand cartridges from functioning properly. A solution is to remove the chip from your original Brother cartridge, and place it on the new cartridge you have purchased.
